Joseph Chan is the Chief Legal Officer at Yum China, a HK$200B US Fortune 500 consumer company (NYSE: YUMC | HKEX: 9987). As a member of the leadership team, Joseph counsels the Group CEO and Board of Directors, and oversees the legal, governance, intellectual property, risk management, compliance and international government affairs functions. He chairs the compliance oversight and disclosure committees, and serves on the investment committee, among others.

Yum China has been named one of the world’s 50 most innovative companies by “Fast Company” in 2020 and one of the world's 100 most influential companies by “Time” in 2021.The company was spun-off from Yum! Brands and became fully independent in 2016. The company is a constituent of the Hang Seng Composite Index of the HKEX.

Joseph has been profiled by ALB as one of 21 leading general counsel in 2021. The YUMC law department he leads has received numerous accolades including being named 2020 in-house team of the year by ALB and 2021 F&B industry team of the year by CBLJ.

Prior to Yum China, Joseph was a partner at Sidley Austin and a managing partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, two leading US law firms. For over a decade he was repeatedly recognized by Chambers Asia, IFLR and Legal 500 as a leading corporate, capital markets and M&A lawyer. He led teams over HK$300B worth of complex matters across the consumer, health care, technology and financial services industries.

Joseph frequently speaks at industry events. His views have been quoted and published numerous times in such prominent publications as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Bloomberg Businessweek and The South China Morning Post. He has presented at symposia held at Harvard and Stanford, among others.
